What Are The Major Health Insurance Companies In The United States?
There are a lot of health insurance companies in the United States, but in certain areas, there may only be a couple to choose from. Employers may only have one or two insurance companies that are willing to insure a group of people.
Some of the bigger companies throughout the United States are as follows:
*Group Health Cooperative, they are a very large insurance company and have some of their own hospitals throughout Washington and Idaho. They cover approximately 590,000 individuals.
*Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association has 39 different health insurance companies associated with the name. This medical insurance giant covers about 100 million people in the US.
*Health Net is one of the biggest health care companies in the US. They cover about 6.6 million people in all 50 states.
*Assurant has been providing health insurance in the US since 1892. They estimate that they cover approximately 1 million people. They are based in New York City.
*United Health Group has seven companies that operate under its name. One of its biggest companies is United Health Care. UHC was created in 1977 and was the first insurance company to offer a senior program. It is estimated that the United Health Group covers 70 million people across the US. Although consumers have rated the insurance company very high, healthcare executives have a very poor opinion of the company.
*Kaiser Permanente was founded by a physician and industrialist back in 1945. They offer a managed care insurance plan, and it is estimated they cover 8.6 million people. They have three medical centers that operate under the Kaiser name.
*Humana Inc. has reported it covers over 11.5 million people with health insurance. The company was awarded the very high honor of being one of the top five healthcare companies in the US, the March 2008 issue of Fortune magazine.
