What Are The Different Causes Of Bad Breath?

Do you have problems with bad breath or halitosis? Do you know what causes that embarrassing odor? There are several reasons for the presence of bad breath. Believe it or not it is possible for some people to have bad breath and they are not even aware of it. However, if you are concerned about this unpleasant condition, then see your dental care provider.

Why do garlic and onions have such an offensive after effect? Certain foods contain volatile oils and once digested they enter your blood stream and then they are transferred to your lungs. Your lungs will emit this pungent odor until the food is eliminated from your body. Brushing and mouth rinses can only cover the odor temporarily. Order that next cheeseburger, but hold the onions. Crash diets and fasting also cause bad breath as the breakdown of chemicals takes place.

When you fail to brush and floss your teeth properly particles of food are left behind to collect bacteria. Food particles will actually rot as they collect between your teeth and around your tongue and gums. It’s the bacteria growth that is actually causing the foul odor. It is very unappealing when you think about it in this light.

What medications are you taking? Several medications play an active part in producing unpleasant breath. It would be a good idea to make a list of foods you eat and medications you use if you are experiencing constant bad breath. Take this list to your dental care professional so he/she can determine what the cause might be.

Have you ever experienced dry mouth? Saliva works to moisten and cleanse your mouth to help remove food particles. When saliva decreases dead cells collect and decompose in your mouth causing bad breath. Do you sleep with your mouth open? I am sure you have experienced morning breath because dry mouth naturally occurs while you sleep.

Do you happen to use tobacco products or drink alcoholic beverages? Not only are these a danger to your health they cause offensive breath odor as well.

Are you suffering from any medical disorder? Respiratory infection, sinus infection, bronchitis, postnasal drip, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, and liver or kidney conditions are all commonly associated with bad breath.

Finally, gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis) is usually the underlying issue concerning chronic bad breath. If you suffer from canker sores the may cause foul odor especially if they are associated with gum disease.

The best thing for you to do is see your dentist and get his/her advice on what is causing your bad breath. If it is not related to dental health they will most likely suggest that you see your family physician.

Pregnancy And Botox

The effect is instantaneous and can last for some months. It is not that costly and so preferred by many women looking to avoid the signs of aging. Most of them can undergo this treatment for removing wrinkles; but the only group that is strongly advised against using any kind of Botox injection, are pregnant women and lactating mothers.

The relation between Botox and pregnancy has not been explicitly researched on. It is not known whether or how using Botox under your skin may harm your unborn child. Still doctors are unanimous in their advice that pregnant and breast-feeding mothers should not be using Botox injections. There is another reason why medical practitioners say that using Botox during pregnancy is not needed; the skin automatically becomes smoother during this period removing the reason for using Botox in the first place!

Botox stands for Botulinum Toxin A. It is a toxin, which is caused by dangerous bacteria that causes food poisoning, called botulism. So, in a way when you receive that injection of Botox to eliminate wrinkles in your skin due to aging, you are injecting toxins under your skin! That is why it is assumed that Botox and pregnancy won’t go well together.

Why So Little Research Is Being Done

It is very difficult to research in this field as for that researched have to use Botox on pregnant women. It is very natural that no would-be mother will want to risk the life of her unborn child in such a manner! Hence there are no definite answers to the question of relationship between Botox and pregnancy.

Pregnancy can do the same thing that Botox does, i.e. reduce the amount of wrinkles on skin. As water is retained more on the body during the nine months of pregnancy, the skin automatically becomes smoother and there is a healthy glow in the face of an expectant mother.

Effect Of Botox In Your Body

In some cases, the botulism bacteria can spread to other parts of your body, beyond that area in where it has been injected. This warning is from FDA and it can result in side effects that include breathing and swallowing difficulties; both of which can be dangerous to your life! There can be other symptoms like vocal changes, muscle weakness, slurring of words, incontinence and blurred vision. All these make it more important to avoid Botox during pregnancy.

Do Popular Fad Diets Work?

It seems like so many celebrities today market their own diet, exercise, or weight loss programs, celebrities like Suzanne Somers or Kathy Ireland. The appeal of these programs is obvious, because celebrities are always so trim and healthy-looking. And since celebrities are often amiable and trustworthy, it’s easy to trust that their products will work for you.

Most celebrities, however, do not have any professional training in the fields of exercise, health, or nutrition. Often, they are merely offering a good sales offer to the public.

Experts on health and nutrition Annette B. Natow and Jo-Ann Heslin, who wrote the book Get Skinny the Smart Way, say that consumers should be apprehensive of celebrity-inspired diet and exercise plans. They point out these kinds of books are usually based on nutritional fiction and that, while the diets outlined in these books may result in short-term weight loss, they are not always very healthy for the long term. It might be wise to instead consider a plan written by health and nutrition experts.

Celebrities aren’t the only pitchers of fad diets. There have been many ridiculous fad diets through the years, and many people have tried them, including the grapefruit diet, which suggests eating a grapefruit before each meal. Then there is the cabbage soup diet, which involves eating all the cabbage soup you can. There have been fads that require eating nothing but eggs, eating only raw foods, even fasting every other day. These diets not healthy.

No major health group ever supported the cabbage soup diet. The American Heart Association condemns it, noting that it can cause you long-term harm. Advocates of the diet say that you can lose as much as 15 pounds a week on it. However, this is just water, and when you begin eating other foods again, you will gain back all of the weight immediately. There are a few possible side effects of doing the cabbage soup diet, which include weakness, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Another dubious diet plan is known as food combining. Proponents of this type of dieting preach that you are overweight because you eat the wrong types of foods together. The requirements of this diet seem pretty random. For example, the diet might state that you can eat a banana only at breakfast. This makes no sense, as your stomach can digest different foods at any time of day. The goal of this plan is to consume fewer calories, but there are more efficient and healthy ways of doing this.

There are even claims that you can lose weight while you sleep. By using their product before you go to bed at night, you will lose weight in your dreams. This is an impossibility. There are even diet plans that state that you can lose weight by eating their special milkshakes or candy bars. These products are nothing more than milk and candy with added vitamins and minerals. You rarely feel sated or full after using these products, which can lead you to binge eat, and eat more calories than you would have otherwise. In addition, plans such as this make it very difficult to maintain any weight loss in the long term.

There is a lot of money to be made in the diet industry. Marketing companies will continue to feed off the ill health and insecurities of overweight people. When looking for an effective diet plan, it is your job to know the fad diets from the legitimate ones. In the long run, there are no true short cuts to weight loss. A successful weight loss program takes time and determination, along with exercise, healthful eating, and portion control.

His Head Injury Has Affected His Whole Body

Question:

My 22-yearold son has severe head injuries from a car accident. He has damage to his brainstem and pinhead bleeding around the brain. He is now conscious and remembers all aspects of his life. He has paralysis of one vocal cord, which we are told will get better with speech therapy. There is weakness on his right side – his arm requires splints to straighten it – and he has developed ataxia (defect of gait). What can he do to help his recovery?

Answer:

From your description, your son has symptoms similar to those following a stroke, in that his body and parts of the brain on one side are affected. Over the past two decades, I have been using a powerful physical rehabilitation technique to help stroke patients.

There have been two successful clinical studies: the first was carried out at the Hammersmith Hospital in 1996 with l2 elderly stroke patients under the supervision of a consultant geriatrician. Last year, with funding from a patient and the cooperation of Peninsula Medical School based at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust, my brother Nizam and I set up a research project where we rehabilitated another group of l7 stroke patients.

First, I advise you work on the neck, as the vertebral arteries located inside the cervical spine irrigate the brainstem, which has centres that control vocal cords; the cerebellum, which controls gait and posture, as well as other areas that must be involved in such a complex case. He should first be on his back, with a pillow under his head. Massage both sides of the neck, using oil such as my Alive Back Massage Oil (Integrated Health Group,), or two tablespoon sweet almond oil with three drops essential lavender oil. Rub the muscles and tendons of the neck. (Details on how to do this are shown on my Life style DVD, Integrated Health Group.) Then he should turn over so you can massage the shoulders using both hands, squeezing then releasing the muscles. This will improve the blood circulation. Initially the muscles will be stiff and sore. As days go by, the muscles will ease and this massage will facilitate the better circulation of blood and cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the brain.

Next you must work on the right arm and hand. It seems that it has already developed extreme spasm of muscles due to the brain damage. Massaging the biceps on the outside upper arm and the flexor muscles running down the inside arm will help relieve tightness and lessen the chance of total loss of use of the right hand. Massage the entire back and focus on the buttock muscles on the right side, particularly the tender trigger point in the centre of the right cheek. This can help bone up muscles which participate in balance and posture.

Next, massage the right quadriceps( front of thighs) and right hamstrings( back of thighs).Then massage the right calf and shin muscles, using your thumbs and fingers to clasp them from both sides.

Special Marma points, which the martial arts practitioners of ancient India used to revive muscles paralysed in action. Stimulating them with your thumb can reactivate specific muscles involved in controlling gait, balance, co-ordination and posture.

Nutrition is important since there may be a tendency to gain weight your son should avoid sugar, oily or fatty foods, including pork, lamb and dairy products. H e should drink freshly juiced carrots, celery, apple and root ginger (preferably organic), and eat one banana daily. Carrots and bananas contain potassium, which is good for muscles. So, too, is lean protein (chicken breast, turkey, eggs, almonds soaked in water for 24 hours, lentils, tofu, cottage cheese).

The more tense and tired your son is the worse his muscle performance will be. Practise retention breathing: inhale for three seconds, hold for three to six, then exhale for six. Also practice brisk exhalation, forcing the air out of the lungs by sucking in the abdomen sharply, which raises the dome of the abdomen and helps energise the body.

I strongly recommend seeing an experienced chiropractor or osteopath for two sessions to adjust the cervical vertebrae, which have probably been misaligned.

Acupuncture is also useful in some cases. When the muscles become active again,

physiotherapists or therapeutic Iyengar yoga specialists can assist with exercises.
